Build It Yourself: The New Business Reality

Got this email from the owner of Dearborn Denim last week:

“We cut and sew jeans at our factory in Chicago. We stock full length unhemmed jeans. We sell HEMMED jeans to length. Shopify does not support mapping unhemmed to hemmed inventory, and there wasn’t an app for it.

With AI, small businesses like ours can now have coded a solution. The future is now!”

Read that again.

A denim company just built custom inventory software. Not hired someone to build it. Built it themselves.

The Old World is Crumbling

Five years ago, Dearborn Denim had three options:

  1. Live with Shopify’s limitations (and angry customers)
  2. Pay $50k+ for custom development
  3. Buy expensive enterprise software that still wouldn’t fit

They chose option 1. Like millions of other small businesses.

Not anymore.

What Actually Happened

Dearborn’s problem was specific: They stock unhemmed jeans but sell hemmed ones. Simple concept. Nightmare for standard e-commerce platforms.

Their email continues:

“We are now able to represent when a product is in stock or out of stock to customers based on the unhemmed inventory levels currently on the shelf and ready for shipment.”

They didn’t just patch a problem. They built exactly what they needed.

This Changes Everything

I’ve been saying this for months, but here’s proof in the wild:

The barriers are gone.

You don’t need:

  • A computer science degree
  • A $100k development budget
  • Six months of project management
  • A team of consultants

You need a specific problem and the willingness to solve it.

Who Should Be Scared

  • SaaS companies building one-size-fits-none solutions
  • App marketplaces charging monthly fees for features that should be native
  • Development agencies charging enterprise prices for simple logic
  • Consultants who’ve built careers on software complexity

The moat is gone. The gatekeepers are irrelevant.

What This Means for Your Business

Last week, I built a WordPress plugin in 8 hours. This week, a denim company built inventory management software.

Next week? Your competitors might build something that makes them 10x more efficient.

The question isn’t whether you can build custom software anymore.

The question is: What’s stopping you?

The New Rules

  1. If it’s specific to your business, build it yourself Generic solutions create generic businesses
  2. Start with the smallest possible version Dearborn didn’t rebuild Shopify. They solved ONE problem.
  3. Perfect is the enemy of shipping Their solution works. That’s all that matters.
  4. Your unique problems are now your competitive advantage IF you solve them.

Your Move

Every business has their “hemmed jeans” problem. That specific thing that no software quite handles right.

You’ve probably worked around it for years. Accepted it as “just how things are.”

Not anymore.

Dearborn Denim just showed us the future. Small businesses building exactly what they need, exactly when they need it.

The tools are here. The barriers are gone.

What are you going to build?
